Takata Airbags Cause Injuries and Death

Feb 10, 2017 | Defective Products

There has recently been a lot of media attention regarding defective auto parts and airbags in particular. A lot of this centers around the millions of Americans that have been affected by the defective Takata airbags.

In environments with high levels of humidity, the moisture can seep inside the Takata airbag inflator, causing the chemicals to destabilize. This creates a situation where the inflator housing can explode in even a minor crash, propelling metal shards into the vehicle’s passenger cabin. These flawed airbags have caused about 180 injuries and 11 fatalities in the United States. If you believe you’ve been injured due to defects in your car, contact the product liability lawyers at Belt, Bruner, & Barnett P.C. today.

Currently, there are 46 million Takata airbags that have been recalled in 29 million vehicles. In May 2016, Takata issued an Amended Consent Order which stated that auto manufacturers must recall additional airbags over the next three years so that every frontal Takata inflator with non-desiccated phase-stabilize ammonium nitrate (PSAN) will be added to the recall list.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working diligently to prevent more injuries and deaths from occurring because of the hazardous airbags. Automakers affected by the Takata recall will have to inform the NHTSA when they have enough replacement parts to begin repairs and adhere to the NHTSA’s best consumer messaging practices.

Why File a Lawsuit?

The Takata airbag recall is the largest and most complicated safety recall in the history of the United States. It’s unfortunate that a device that was intended to save lives has injured and taken the lives of countless individuals.

If you have been injured because of a faulty Takata airbag, you may be able to obtain a settlement for any losses that you have endured by filing a lawsuit with qualified motor vehicle accident lawyers. These losses may include the past and future medical bills, lost earnings, special services like home health care, and pain and suffering.

In the event that you have lost a loved one as a result of fatal injuries from a Takata airbag, you may be entitled to compensation to help pay for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and any other devastating losses.
