A concussion injury is a traumatic brain injury that changes the way a person’s brain functions. Causes include blows to the head and the rapid acceleration or deceleration of a person’s head.
The fluid inside a person’s skull cushions the brain from minor bumps. But when a person receives a sharp blow to the head, or when a person’s head snaps forward or backward, the brain forcefully slides back and forth against the skull. This causes a concussion.
Common sources for concussion injuries are:
The most common symptoms of a concussion injury are:
A person who suffers a concussion faces an increased risk for epilepsy. A person who receives multiple concussive brain injuries may suffer lasting cognitive impairment.
A related condition that results from concussion injuries is post-concussion syndrome. Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is the ongoing consequence of a concussion. It can require expensive medical treatment. It’s unclear why PCS occurs in some people who have suffered concussions. Symptoms may last for a few months or persist for a year or more.
A concussion may get better after a few days of rest, but in some cases, the symptoms linger. This is “post-concussion syndrome.” Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is the continuation of concussion symptoms seven to 10 days after the injury. PCS may persist for a few months or for more than a year.
Symptoms of PCS include:
Like others who suffer a concussion or other brain injury, PCS victims may exhibit behavior or emotional changes. They may become more irritable, suspicious, argumentative or stubborn.
PCS is treated with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. This could include prescription drugs for anxiety or depression. Sometimes, psychological therapy for anxiety or cognitive problems is prescribed.

Doctors perform neurological tests, imaging tests, and observation to diagnose concussions. A doctor typically recommends that the victim rest and avoid both physical exertion and activities that require mental concentration to let the brain heal. This can result in many missed days from work or loss of productivity.
At Belt, Bruner, & Barnett P.C. we are committed to securing funds from the at-fault party or parties that will fully and fairly compensate the concussion victim. The possible responsible parties may include another driver, a trucking company, an employer, a contractor, a school or a coach. We will work tirelessly to secure damages that may include medical expenses, lost income, physical and emotional pain and suffering and other related losses. In some cases, an award of punitive damages may be warranted.
